Are You Optimistic?

Trying to be optimistic in times of difficulties may be a hard thing to achieve. Optimistic people tend to think of the brighter sides of things and situations. They are ready to face whatever the outcome would be, thus they take control of their thoughts and actions. So are you the positive thinker or the other way around? Do you handle stresses well or are you easily flushed out by circumstances? Find out and reveal your true identity in each situation.

    • “If the school isn’t for me, I’ll have to find a second option.”

    • Think “I can do it. If others can, why can’t I?” Then put a smile on your face.

    • “If I don’t get hired, the job’s not meant for me.”

    • Have an alternative solution. Present the report even if you don’t have any visual aids and explain what happened to your boss later.
    • “If my boss finds out, I’m ruined. My career’s at stake. I can’t do this.”
    • Call in sick and leave the office immediately.
    • Borrow your co-worker’s laptop and try to do the Powerpoint again. “If I get fired, I’ll accept it.”

    The company you are working for is downsizing. You keep telling yourself that you would not be included, you have good performance record and attendance although you are still probationary. Unluckily, you are given a 30-day notice of end-of-contract. You

    • Tell yourself “I’ve done my best in this firm. I know there is a better job out there for me.”
    • Think “Lots of people are unemployed, I know I’ll be one of them and it will take me months before I get a new job.”
    • Cry hysterically, causing a scandal in the workplace. Then leave without informing your boss.
    • “If it is meant to be. Guess I have to accept this horrible fate. Maybe I'll just try Chicago."

    At long last, you are pregnant. Your husband is happy to know that you’d be parents. Enthusiastic, something comes up your spine and it is giving you chills. Hospital bills and other major expenses will incur soon. What do you do?

    • Lots of expectant mothers go through this. “I know I can do it. I’ll help my husband financially and my baby’s gonna be fine.”
    • Think of worse things that could possibly come… labor pain, unhealthy baby… so on…
    • Be depressed all throughout your pregnancy. Losing your appetite etc.
    • “If those things happen, my husband and I should be ready both emotionally and spiritually.”

    You keep dreaming of having that brand new car you’ve been eyeing for years. But your brother discourages you often and tells you, “You won’t have that car, it’s too expensive for you.” Your move on this:

    • Save more money from your salary. Lessen your expenses and explore on having a sideline for additional income.
    • “Maybe he’s right. Gas is too pricey, maintenance is costly. I can still commute.”
    • Be disheartened by what your brother said. “I can’t save enough for the car. Maybe I’ll stop dreaming about it.”
    • “My dream is just a dream. It will never come true. But if I can’t have it, I’ll stick to my budget and buy a second-hand car instead.”

    On a dance audition for the lead role in your school, you’re determined to try it out. As you enter the auditorium, you saw one girl crying, another girl distressed. You think:

    • “I have the look, the talent and the stage appeal. I have to believe in my strengths. I know I can do it.”
    • “Maybe this outfit is not right for me. Why am I so stupid to wear these flats?”
    • “I’m not good enough for the role, if they did not make it, how can I?” Then leave the auditorium.

    • Think of your graduation day and your parents’ smiles as you walk on the stage... Then enter the room confidently.
    • Say “Well, here goes nothing…” to yourself.
    • Reschedule the defense and explain to your professor you have a family emergency.
    • “… I can always enroll next semester.”

    You have been invited as a bridesmaid to your best friend’s wedding in Chicago two weeks from now. Unfortunately, you booked too late and were waitlisted. You tried other airlines but can’t get through.

    • “I’ll do my best to contact each airline every now and then… and whatever it takes.”

    • Fake an illness. “I’m sure my best friend would understand.”
    • Call up your best friend that you can’t make it. But you’ll be there maybe a week late. Hey it’s better late than never.

    • Think “I have to beat her. This is for me and my school.” Do your best. Think positive that you will win and concentrate.

    • Retreat? Retreat!

    • Back out. You won't risk revealing your health problems to the public.

    Your 4-year relationship with your guy is in its rockiest stage. A friend (who has a reputation of a “gossip girl) told you she saw your boyfriend with another girl at the mall. How do you confront this setting?

    • “I love and trust him. He’ll not do that to me ever.” Then talk to him privately.
    • “Maybe he really does have another girl. He usually goes home from work very late.”
    • Take your things with you on the way out without even facing him. Game’s over.
    • “If he doesn’t love me anymore, I can still find guys way better than him.”

    Your husband is rushed to the hospital because of a car accident. The doctor’s diagnosis is his brain is damaged and he is in a coma. Saddened by the news, you immediately visit the chapel to pray. You:

    • Pray “I know You will heal his pain. I love him and I trust in You that you will save him from this crisis.”
    • "This is all my fault. If I were there with him, this won't happen."
    • Run away from the chapel, the hospital. Go anywhere.
    • “If you want to take him now, let it be.”

    • Breathe deeply, letting all the stress out. Then pray. “I know You have plans for me. Please give me the strength to overcome these obstacles. I have faith in You and in myself.”
    • “Am I a bad girl? Why are you punishing me? I don’t know what to do with my life anymore.”
    • Shut all the lights in your room. Close the curtains and cry till you fall asleep.
    • “If these happen for a reason, then let it be. I’m tired of fighting for my life.”

    Your job application in your dream company did not work out. Tired and frustrated, you headed home and sat on your couch. You:

    • Think “I believe in my strengths that I could face the downfalls in my life. Help me God to accept this and regain my strength so I can learn and move forward.”
    • Think “This is all my fault. I cannot get a better job. I am worthless.”
    • Disconnect the phone line, turn off your cellphone. You don’t want anything to disturb you as you drink alcohol till you pass out.
